Glass4Good, O-I’s community-based recycling program that incentivizes glass recycling is celebrating its two-year anniversary.
Through the program, O-I provides opportunities for residents to recycle their glass, and in turn, we provide a donation to the local United Way based on the amount of collected glass. The program creates more recycled material for our manufacturing system while creating positive change in the community.
The program first started in Danville, Pennsylvania, and James City County, Virginia, in 2021. The program has seen enormous success and is now active in five different areas across the U.S. In 2022:
- Jefferson, PA: 14 collection sites gathered 86.7 tons of glass, resulting in nearly $6,000 donated to the Dubois Area United Way.
- City of Danville, PA: Four collection sites gathered 57 tons of glass, resulting in over $5,000 donated to the United Way of Danville-Pittsylvania County.
- James City County, VA: Three collection sites gathered about 84 tons of glass, resulting in $5,250 donated to the United Way of the Virginia Peninsula.
- City of Greeley, CO: Two collection sites collected 21.7 tons of glass and $3,200 was donated to the United Way of Weld County.
- City of Waco, TX: From the program’s launch in Nov. 2022 until Feb. 2023, about 89 tons of glass was collected through three sites and $3,482 was donated to the United Way of Waco-McLennan County.
Financial Contributions Making Big Impact
The United Way contributions serve residents in a variety of ways – from helping with hunger, housing and literacy.
In Weld County, Colorado, Glass4Good supports Weld’s Way Home, which works to end homelessness.
“The United Way Housing Navigation Center is an important resource for working with our neighbors that are experiencing homelessness. It gives law enforcement and other service providers a place for referral that can help people meet immediate needs as well as assist our neighbors in getting back on a path to housing,” said Melanie Woolman, President & CEO, United Way of Weld County. “Thank you to O-I and Glass4Good for supporting Weld’s Way Home and its efforts for ending homelessness in Weld County.”
In James City County, Virginia, United Way partners with several agencies – including Habitat for Humanity, Literacy for Life, Virginia Peninsula Foodbank, Housing Partnerships, Inc., and more to serve residents.
In Danville, Pennsylvania, the United Way contributions support the Danville-Pittsylvania Cancer Center (DPC), a local non-profit. Donations support cancer-related prescriptions, travel reimbursement, and medical supplies/equipment to the community – with the mission of unraveling the effects of cancer.
Previously, Glass4Good Danville supported the Book Ends program, and O-I’s donations provided 5,883 books to local children.
Recycled glass continues to be recycled through Glass4Good – nearly 175 tons was collected in the first quarter of 2023 alone. Additional information on Glass4Good is available here.
